So what are they? Well, Garry's Mod takes advantage of the Steam Workshop by allowing other players to create modifications for the game that others can use. The main reason Garry's Mod is so popular is because of the mods. I've gone on far too long without talking about the mods. It can be really fun to play with other players, but there is one big downside that can make it a pain to play online, which are the mods. There are many servers hosting different game modes that allow you to play with other players. You can also change the controls and bind actions to certain keys if you wish. You can open several menus using certain keys.
Clicking allows you to a variety of actions, like shooting. You use the WASD keys to move yourself around, and you move your mouse to look around. The game controls like a typical shooter would, and how most Source games control. There are also detectives and other mechanics that I didn't mention, but that's just the basic gist of the mode. This allows for some really fun gameplay. The fun thing about this mode is that the game doesn't tell who the traitors are unless you are a traitor. Weaponry is scattered throughout the entire map and players can pick them up. The other players' goal is to eliminate all the traitors. The traitors' goal is to murder everybody else. You're put with a bunch of players and a couple of them a traitors. Trouble in Terrorist Town is there other mode you can switch to. You can weld objects together, inflate ragdolls, and MANY other things that are extremely useful. The Tool Gun allows you to do a massive variety of things that I can't simply describe in a single paragraph. You can turn it, throw it, drown it, you name it. Using it, you can manipulate any physical object. The Physics Gun is a far more powerful version of the Gravity Gun from Half Life 2. The two weapons you'll be using the most are the Physics Gun and the Tool Gun. You can give yourself any weapon that exists from Half Life 2 as well. You can spawn NPCs from Half Life 2, along with ragdolls and props. You choose a map and mess around in the world. Sandbox is pretty straight forward and what you would expect. They are Sandbox and Trouble in Terrorist Town. You can switch between two modes that come with the game.
You can begin a new game by yourself or with friends via the title screen. It's a bit tough to describe Garry's Mod's gameplay. People have made some incredible art using the game (See picture below)! The graphics can look a bit dated by today's standards, but this can be fixed by downloading modifications of the game.
FUN GAME MODES IN GMOD MODS
If you dislike the artstyle, there are mods on the Steam Workshop that can alter how everything looks. The more powerful your computer is, the more beautiful the game will look. Garry's Mod runs on the Source Engine, which have a fairly realistic artstyle. If you've played Half Life 2 (or any game that uses the Source Engine really.), you'll be very familiar with the artstyle. Some mods and gamemodes for the game rely on story as a typical game would, but the base game itself has no story. People have played this mod of Half Life 2 for thousands of hours, but is it all that it's raved to be? Am I a piece of shit for liking this game or the most correct person in the world? Let's find out! People have made true pieces of art and terrifying things that shouldn't exist with this game. Released back in 2004, it has continued to hold a strong fandom and community (whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you).
